Seeing its features, you realize at first glance that it is one of the most complete G-Shock watches. If you like the world of sensors, and you don’t want to spend a lot of money, this Casio is what you are looking for.

Difficult to find something better for the price of this model: it offers a barometer (260 / 1,100 hPa), a thermometer (-10 °C / +60 °C), a compass, and a 10,000 m altimeter along with solar charging and other additions to the G-range. Shock. It also offers sunrise/sunset data and resists low temperatures (-10ºC).

It’s also water resistant to 200 meters and highly shock resistant, something typical of Casio G-Shock watches (hence the name).

As you can see, it is quite large, it has a 55mm diameter, an 18mm thick case, and a 21mm strap, so prepare your wrist for this Casio. Its weight is 93 grams.

Will it be big on your wrist? In my case, I have a wrist diameter of 18.5cm and it fits me perfectly:

One of the best things about this watch is its solar charge. Many people prefer to change the battery in other Casio watches every 2, 5, or 10 years, but I think that if you take good care of it, every day it gets sun or a little fluorescent light, the Rangeman’s battery will not let you down.

Since I’ve been wearing it, the charge level hasn’t dropped from “High” (I live in Madrid, and it’s usually sunny. I go out a lot).

It also has radio time synchronization. Tuning usually works well, but as I have already mentioned in another entry where I review another of my Casios, the Casio G-Shock GW-5610, it will depend a lot on where you live (Spain is at the limit of signal reception), or the weather (better a clear day), of the buildings that you have around and of the electronic interferences.

It is always better to let the clock automatically sync at night by placing it near a window rather than facing north.

I’m not going to talk about the sensors or the stopwatches, I’m sure you’ve had a few G-Shocks and you know what the subject is about, but I assure you that using them on this watch is amazing: it’s really easy to access each one of them. You press the big button on the right and they activate one by one. You can see it in the following video:

  • I would just like to point out that you can use the watch to orient a map according to the real environment, take direction readings and that thanks to the barometric pressure sensor you will be able to predict weather conditions with some certainty (an increase/decrease in pressure barometric indicates improving/worsening weather conditions).

Casio G-Shock GW-9400 Rangeman: design and daily use

To say that it is a robust watch is an understatement. Its manufacturing quality is really good: the back of the case is completely made of stainless steel (screwed), as are the buckle and the strap loop. And the resin strap itself looks sturdy, more so than other cheaper Casio models.

It also helps that the buckle and watch loop are polished steel too, and are very well-finished (the loop is shaped like a trapezoid to make it more comfortable on the inside).

The texture of the strap is rough and it is quite easy to use, and place the watch to your liking. At the end of the strap, you will be able to see a rough part that will prevent the buckle from coming loose, something important if we are doing active sports.

The shape of the case is almost circular and has a good dimension. Not big or small, but you’re going to need a good-sized wrist for it to fit. The bezel that covers it is made of urethane and is fixed with 4 screws (not the front ones, which are useless for that). Looks like it’s going to protect the clockwork really well.

As for the dial, in my case the watch has positive digits… it is not at all advisable to get this watch with a negative screen since the numbers are not very well seen. In this case, readability is perfect. Everything is very well distributed in the sphere and everything has its function:

  • In the lower area, we can see the time
  • Just below, a small band with active watch functions
  • Smaller compass dial
  • Graphics in the upper area
  • Intermediate zone for date and battery charge

The glass looks resistant and everything is perfectly appreciated. It looks like it resists bumps and scratches well, and it doesn’t feel plastic at all.

It is necessary to emphasize the buttons on the clock: they are big and wonderful. They are easy to press…and my young daughters love them. There are 6 stainless steel buttons with a rough profile. The button that gives us access to the sensors is especially striking.

The button on the front, dedicated to the light, is eye-catching and easy to press. They can be used underwater with no problem.

And what about the front screws of the box (4)? Well, they are not used for what you are imagining… they are not designed to fix the rubber from the outside to the resin inside… Function? We’ll have to ask Kikuo Ibe or one of Casio’s engineers.

But best of all, and I know it can be a silly detail, is seeing the “mascot” of the watch on the steel back. The cat with a compass that Casio has put is very striking and one of the different Rangeman.

We can also see another interesting thing: see the watch manufacturing batch. In this case 202A022I.

  • 202A: Factory where it was manufactured
  • 022: day of the year of manufacture (January 22)
  • I: Year of manufacture (G: 2017; H: 2018; I: 2019…). in 2019

Day-to-day use? Well, although it may seem like a big watch, it is not as big as other G-Shock models, and you can even leave it to sleep with it. It is not heavy, it does not bother you and it is really comfortable to wear.

The GW-M5610 is better for everyday use because of its smaller size, but it doesn’t have all the sensors that the Rangeman has.

Is it possible to push the button on the sensors with the top of your hand? It doesn’t happen to me, but I understand that there are people who do have this problem…

Advice? Activate the automatic light so that when you turn your wrist from the horizontal position towards you, a small LED in the lower left lights up. Perhaps it is what I like least about the watch. Other G-Shock models offer better lighting that evenly covers the entire screen, including the GW-M5610.

Which Casio GW-9400 Rangeman should you buy? Is any other recommended Casio G-Shock similar to the Rangeman GW 9400?

There are a few models, in different colors, limited editions, from different countries… but they are all equally good. Buy the model that has the best price and that has the color that you like the most.

The version with the negative screen of this watch is not one of the best looking. And probably if you want bold colors, the price is going to go up quite a bit.

What is clear is that for price quality at the moment it is worth buying this Rangeman 9400 compared to other much, much more expensive Casio models such as the GPR-B1000.

Is any other Casio G-Shock model that is worth comparing to this Rangeman?

In 2020 Casio launched a really interesting model with a design similar to the GW 9400 (at least the exterior part, because the dial has nothing to do with it). This is the Casio G-Shock GBD-H1000, a watch full of sensors, with Bluetooth connectivity, a very good design, and perfect for practicing all kinds of sports activities thanks to its pulse meter and its built-in GPS.

That is the big difference with the Rangeman 9400: it has GPS, and the most surprising thing is that it has solar charging… and that this is enough to use this GPS without problems and without having to charge it every two times three times on the electrical network.

Casio G-Shock GW-9400 Rangeman vs Casio G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster

Casio G-Shock GW-9400 vs Casio G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster

Casio G-Shock GW-9400 Rangeman Review and Buyer's Guide

The Casio G-Shock GW-9400 is probably always compared to the Casio G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster. In the picture, you can see both. The GWG-1000 Mudmaster (59.5×56.1×18mm) is larger than the GW-9400 Rangeman (55.2×53.5×18.2mm). The Mudmaster’s design is spectacular, but the Rangeman is a classic.

This Mudmaster model is considerably more expensive than the Rangeman, but its resistance is proven beyond all limits. The full review at:

It is a Casio watch specially designed for people with hard jobs: If you work in areas with rubble, dirt, and earth or are simply an adventurer, this Casio men’s watch is perfect: It has sapphire crystal (the Rangeman does not), it has resistance to mud and vibrations so you can use it with cutters, grinders, drills and all kinds of heavy machinery. And it’s Triple Sensor.

Both have solar charging and Multiband 6, something very important in this type of watch.

Moral? The Mudmaster is a premium watch in the making, but you’re going to have to pay twice as much for it as the Rangeman. They have the same sensors, one is completely digital (Rangeman), and the other digital analog (Mudmaster). The Rangeman is smaller and “less rugged” than the Mudmaster.

If you want access to the Triple Sensor for little money, the Casio G-Shock GW-9400 Rangeman. If you want a watch with sapphire crystal, premium manufacturing, and very resistance (especially hard work) and you have a large wrist, the Casio G-Shock GWG-1000 Mudmaster is your watch.

Conclusion: Is it worth buying a Casio G-Shock GW-9400 Rangeman?

Without a doubt. It’s the Casio watch that gives you access to the “Triple Sensor” without breaking the bank. It is much cheaper than the Frogman models or the new Rangeman GPR-B1000.

It is a reliable, resistant watch, not too big if we compare it with other models and it is perfect, in short, to always carry with you on your outings to the countryside, to swim, or to take on a trip.
